The bonding meals story

Jeffrey was raised the way many boys/men were in the 70s and 80s….he only ventured to the kitchen to raid the biscuit tin! But after leaving home and defence force dining halls, he got tired of frozen meals and signed up for community college cooking classes. And his tastebuds are living happily ever after!

Deb grew up watching her Mum cook in the kitchen (and helping a bit) but her enthusiasm and confidence were limited. By the time she was fending for herself in the kitchen, she subsisted on a cycle of wraps and tacos, occasionally spicing things up with a lasagne or chicken soup.

Then they met and fell in love. Deb was in awe of and grateful for Jeffrey’s cooking enthusiasm and skills. Jeffrey made it his mission to find and cook recipes using all her favorite spices, flavours and textures (as in finger food!). Deb learned how fun it is to cook together, to share in the elation of discovering a new recipe fit for our ‘greatest hits’ album – and also to commiserate and laugh off the times a meal just doesn’t work out…whether due to a dodgy recipe, an experimental addition/deletion gone wrong, a platter full of food dropped on the kitchen floor, or a half-millimetre-squared piece of thumb sliced off (Jeffrey picked up takeaway and brought it to Deb in the hospital waiting area that time!).

Here is just one story of how meals can bond people. When we eat, we create so many connections – with sun, rain, soil, farmers who risked and laboured to produce our ingredients, and their creator. We connect with our own bodies as we eat, nurturing our tastebuds, energy levels and immune system. Meals provide opportunities to bond – cooking together, eating together, and sharing recipes with friends and family living both near and far away.

This blog takes it a step further: we also want to connect with people in developing countries by raising $2,200 to feed 440 families for one month! (of course, we are very open to raising more than that!!) We invite you to be a part of the meal bonding movement and make a gift-multiplying tax-deductible donation to World Vision's Food Aid appeal, via our bondingmeals fundraiser page at EverydayHero.
